RPMI-1640 is an improved Mccoy's 5A medium, which uses a bicarbonate buffer system and is widely used for the culture of normal cells, cancer cells and suspension cells. It contains amino acids, vitamins, inorganic salts and other ingredients, but does not include protein, lipids or growth factors. Thus, it must be supplemented with serum or serum-free additives for optimal cell growth.
