Key to this process is the ability of Activated Protein C (in conjunction with cofactors) to inactivate Factor Va and Factor VIIIa. Protein C is activated by Thrombin, and can be down-regulated by reduction in EPCR and/or thrombomodulin (either of which can be triggered by inflammatory cytokines) and may be up-regulated by Platelet Factor 4.
