Furin is an enzyme belonging to the proprotein convertase family. Its primary function is to cleave precursor proteins, thus facilitating their conversion to an "active" state. 

Recently, Furin has been discovered to play a critical role in cleaving the S Protein of SARS-CoV-2 into the S1 and S2 functional domains, thereby exposing fusion sequences and allowing for continuing viral infiltration of the cell.
