Factor XII deficiency is a genetic condition that causes prolonged clotting of blood in tests such as PTT (partial prothrombin time test), without the presence of prolonged clinical bleeding tendencies. Factor XII is needed for proper blood clotting. However, when Factor XII is deficient, other factors tend to compensate for its absence. The disorder is therefore thought to be benign and usually presents no symptoms.
Researchers are now studying drugs to block (inhibit) Factor XII as a potential therapy for individuals who are prone to developing blood clots.
