Estrogen is a naturally occurring steroid hormone responsible for the development of the female reproductive system; the effects of estrogen are exhibited once estrogen binds to the estrogen receptor (ER) in a cell. Within the cell nucleus, the ERs bind to DNA and promotes the development of both normal breast cells and tumorous breast cells. Estrogen also likely plays a significant role in the later development of post-menopausal diseases as many are thought to result from a deficiency of endogenous estrogen.
Traditional treatment for postmenopausal symptoms typically involves estrogen replacement therapy, however long-term use of these treatment programs can lead to serious side effects like hypertension, breast cancer, and even dementia. Because of this, the exploration of alternatives, such as plant-derived estrogen (phytoestrogens), has been a growing area of medical research. This study used Charcoal Dextran Stripped Human Serum from Innovative Research to examine the estrogen-like effects of a selection a phytoestrogens, and the results indicated potential for therapeutic use and can serve as the basis for future research into the application of phytoestrogens for the prevention of postmenopausal symptoms.
