Why Researchers Use Animal-Free Reagents in Research

The use of animals and animal-derived reagents in research is commonplace around the world. However, besides potential concerns over the ethics of using animals in research, other concerns have been expressed regarding using animal-derived reagents in research. Some of these concerns include questions in sample quality, inconsistencies between sample formulation, questions about reproducibility, and other similar claims (“Animal-free products”). In this blog, we will cover some of the reasons why a researcher may want to consider using animal-free reagents in their study.

Potential Benefits of Using Animal-Free Reagents


Depending on the goals of your research and your specific research applications, using animal-free reagents could provide you with some potentially substantial benefits. For example, depending on your research, using animal-free reagents may improve the relevance of some experimental models. Though animal models and systems can be great for predicting later responses in humans, depending on your specific research, using animal samples may elicit data that isn’t relevant to later human trials. By using a human-derived system (e.g. human cells, human-relevant media, human platelet lysate), you may be able to better predict how human-focused studies will perform based on the data you gather (“Animal-free products”).


Another potential benefit of using animal-free reagents, specifically antibodies, is improved batch-to-batch consistency when creating antibodies. Furthermore, animal-free recombinant antibodies may also be created with more defined and consistent specificity, leading to more valuable data in the end, such as when compared to animal-system derived polyclonals (“Animal-free products”).

Animal-Free Reagents in Research


There are a variety of research fields that utilize animal-free reagents in their research. One such application is that of cell culture. In the 1950s, a method of supporting cell viability in a culture by supplementing with fetal bovine serum (FBS) was developed and has since been commonly used in practice. Due to batch-to-batch inconsistencies in FBS, however, this method can sometimes produce inconsistent data in experiments. An alternative option that some researchers explore to overcome this obstacle is to utilize animal-free reagents in their cell culture workflow. Researchers exploring this option may use animal-free growth factors or other supplements, as well as utilize human blood derivatives, as those are well documented in literature (“Improving the Human Relevance of Cell Culture Using Animal-Free Culture Media”).

 

Another space where animal-free reagents have been utilized is in immunology research, specifically in experiments involving antibodies. Because the DNA sequence of animal-free antibodies may be better defined, antibodies created from animal-free sources can be easily reproduced and exactly replicated, leading to higher specificity and more reliable data.  Further, production of these animal-free antibodies can often be scaled up and more readily produced on demand when compared to antibodies sourced from animals (“Animal-Free Antibodies”).


Beyond cell culture and antibody development, animal-free reagents are increasingly being adopted across a wide range of life science applications. Recombinant proteins, enzymes, cytokines, and growth factors produced without animal-derived components are commonly used in biochemical assays, drug discovery, molecular biology, and cell signaling research. By utilizing well-defined, animal-free reagents, researchers can reduce experimental variability, improve reproducibility, and simplify compliance with quality standards, making them valuable tools for both basic research and translational studies.
